The development of our new coastal quarry at Kishorn,
in the western Highlands is well under way.
Overburden removal commenced in January, and the first
blast took place in March.
The first task has been to create screening bunds along
the foreshore and install a concrete batching plant to meet the demands of
our first contract – the supply of concrete, aggregates and armourstone to
Balfour Beatty for use on their Raasay Ferry Terminal project. Balfour
Beatty will start casting concrete components very shortly, and our mobile
crushing and screening plant is busy making the required aggregates. The
site is ideal for this purpose, having been developed in the 1970’s for the
construction of the Ninian oilfield production platform – one of the largest
concrete structures ever made..
The quarry is being developed in an excellent quality
sandstone, and it is our intention to produce a range of high skid-resistant
aggregates for export by sea to ports around the UK. The rock is also
ideally suited for the production of armourstone for use on coastal defence
contracts along the west coast.
Following the completion of the Balfour Beatty
contract, a shiploading facility will be installed to take advantage of the
relatively deep water in Loch Kishorn.
